On the issue of the Chagos Islands, the UK Government’s objective has always been, and continues to be, to secure the long-term effective operation of the military base on Diego Garcia. The base is critical for our national security and helping keep the British people safe.
Yet, since its creation, the base has had a contested existence. It has been challenged through various international courts and tribunals, threatening the long-term, secure operation of the base. Because of this, it was clear the Government needed to take action to maintain the UK’s interest and control of the base.
The deal, which the Government inherited at an advanced stage from the previous administration, delivered on the UK’s objective on maintaining the secure, effective operation of this vital military base. It would allow us to operate the UK-US base as we have always done. The Government has, and continues to, work closely with both Mauritius and the United States on the agreement.
It is necessary the Treaty on the Diego Garcia military base is subject to careful consideration, and I know the Government are engaging with all criticisms of the Bill in good faith. I understand the Bill on the Treaty will continue to progress through Parliament, and be subject to further scrutiny, after the latest round of discussions have concluded with the United States.
Ministers are clear that they will never compromise on the UK’s national security. The signing of this agreement guarantees continued full operational control of the Diego Garcia base while reinforcing the strategic defence partnership between the United Kingdom and the United States. The Government believes this base is essential for British counterterrorism efforts, the protection of British interests worldwide, and the security of British military personnel. As global threats escalate, Diego Garcia is increasingly crucial to our national security.
