Hospitality is the backbone of our high streets and the lifeblood of our communities. It contributes over £50 billion to our economy and employs millions of people across the country. Unfortunately, it was hit hard by the economic disruption unleashed by the economic policies of the last administration. Over 10,000 pubs closed, for example, between 2010 and 2024.

I recognise the challenges that the sector faces and I know that the increase in NICs has been difficult, but the Government has been dealing with a very difficult fiscal and economic inheritance. We have taken a number of steps to help. ,

We are introducing new Hospitality and Night-Time Economy Zones to simplify licensing, support al fresco dining and boost footfall. We have also seen High Street Rental Auctions – a scheme empowering local leaders to auction off leases for premises that have been vacant for over a year – and a ban on unfair rent clauses. I also welcome that, through the Hospitality Support Scheme, the Government is working with Pub is the Hub and providing funds to community pubs so they can continue delivering for their communities.

The new Government also took action last year to support local pubs by cutting alcohol duty on draught products – taking a penny off a pint. In addition, it is bringing in permanent business rates cuts for hospitality businesses from next year, delivering a 40% discount to retail, hospitality and leisure properties up to a cash cap of £110,000 per business, as well as freezing the small business rates multiplier. This is a support package worth over £1.6 billion in 2025-26 and will save the average pub over £3,300 in 2025.

I am also raising this with the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Best wishes
