I asked Boris Johnson at Prime Minister’s Questions what he is going to do to stop people disconnecting themselves because they have prepayment meters for their gas and electricity and simply can’t afford to keep them topped up because of rising energy prices.
I’m afraid he didn’t really answer the question. Some years ago, we stopped people having their water supply cut off because they couldn’t pay the bill, and I don’t see what the difference in principle is between that and ensuring that everyone has a right to light and to warmth.
