Hilary at the demonstration in Millennium Square
The fight to save the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Unit continues.
Following the decision of the Government Review to recommend closure of the unit at the Leeds General Infirmary, the campaign is not giving up. There has been very strong support from MPs right across the region. Hilary has signed an Early Day Motion and has written to the Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to urge him to reconsider.
On Monday 23 July, Hilary attended a march and demonstration in the centre of the city where he told the large crowd 'we will not give up'. The next stage of the campaign will be to refer the recommendation to the independent review panel on the grounds that it is the wrong decision, which will leave 5.2 million people in the region without access to the Children’s Heart Surgery expertise in Leeds.
