Hilary's statement on the closure of ThyssenKrupp Woodhead Ltd

This is a devastating blow for all the staff at the factory who have worked so hard to recover from the terrible flooding they suffered on Boxing Day.

It shows how damaging was the Government's decision not to go ahead with a full flood defence scheme for Leeds in 2011. We warned ministers about the impact on the city's economy of a major flood and here is the tragic evidence.

There will also be shock and disappointment that the parent company in Germany has decided to relocate the work outside the UK. Although there remains a risk of flooding on the current site, the company could have reinvested in a new site in Leeds so as to retain its highly skilled, experienced and long-serving staff. As the local MP, together with the staff, the UNITE union and Leeds City Council, we want answers on why this option wasn't chosen.
