Former environment minister Hilary Benn recognised for ‘outstanding contribution’ to animal welfare.
The Labour MP for Leeds Central, Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, has been made ‘Parliamentarian of the Year’ by animal welfare charity the League Against Cruel Sports.“Hilary is a passionate advocate of the hunting ban, and when he was environment minister he took a number of brave decisions,” said Douglas Batchelor, chief executive of the League Against Cruel Sports. “It was a shame that the current government reversed the ban on the use of cages for rearing game birds, but significant nonetheless that Hilary took decisive action against this suffering.”
The League also welcomed Mr Benn’s work on dangerous dogs, and said his rigorous scientific approach to issues such as calls for a cull of badgers, and on snaring was valued. The cut glass award was presented to Mr Benn at his Westminster office earlier this week.
