Tackling Climate Change

The Natural Environment

Climate Change is the greatest threat facing our world, and every nation has a responsibility to play its part in tackling it.

As the Environment Secretary in the last Labour Government, I helped to put the ground-breaking Climate Change Act on the statute book, and led the British negotiating team at the 2007 Bali climate change talks.  What I learned from that experience is that what we need more than anything else is strong political leadership.

As far as the UK is concerned, Labour is committed to taking virtually all carbon out of electricity generation by 2030 and we also want to empower the Green Investment Bank and to help communities rollout plans for a wide ranging insulation programme.

Previously we backed the inclusion of a decarbonisation target of 50-100g of carbon per MWh to be included in the Energy Bill.  The target would be a dramatic cut from current levels of around 450-500g, but our proposal was defeated by the Government in the legislative process.
