As a result of the general election, by the end of 2017 we will have taken the most important decision we have faced about our country’s place in the world for forty years. The Government is now going to bring forward a Bill for a referendum on our membership of the European Union. I will be supporting the Bill, along with my Labour colleagues.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) estimate that 1,300 died in April this year alone, and there are now an estimated 550,000 displaced people in Libya hoping to move on elsewhere.

In my constituency of Leeds Central about 1,900 families are affected by the bedroom tax and many of them are now in rent arrears.  To make matters worse, some of these families have also been affected by cuts in council tax support.

By the end of 2017 the British people will have made the most important decision about our place in the world that they have faced for 40 years when they vote on our membership of the EU. That decision will have a huge impact on the future of jobs, growth and investment, and on our security and influence in the world.

I have been contacted recently by a number of constituents regarding potential changes to surveillance laws and oversight. I know there is real public concern about this extremely important issue, especially given that the Conservative Government has included proposals on this in the Queen’s Speech.

And for our constituents, the prospect of another five years of David Cameron only this time with a Tory majority. None of us can hope to know all the reasons why we lost – and this article does not pretend to – but here’s my attempt to make sense of it.
