HB.Bedroom.Tax.000.jpg

The bedroom tax is unfair, immoral and undermines family life. Over 2,000 households in my constituency have been affected by it and they are all people on low incomes. Most of them want to stay in their family home – it’s what most people would do if they found themselves in this position – but even for those who want to downsize to a smaller property, there simply aren’t enough of them available. This is why the bedroom tax needs to be scrapped completely.

The grave of Private George Edwin Ellison in the St Symphorien Military Cemetery in Mons, Belgium.

George Ellison was from Leeds and served throughout the First World War. Tragically, however, he was killed in Mons on the morning of the Armistice (11 November 1918) and it is said that he was the last British soldier to die in the conflict. In a twist of fate, he lies buried opposite the first British soldier to die on the Western Front, Private John Parr.

It is with great sadness that we have heard the news that our friend John Hodgson has passed away.

John was an active member of the CWU and the Labour Party for many years. He was a passionate believer in social justice and will be much missed.

Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

A number of constituents have been in touch to express their deep concern about the plight of the Yazidis in Iraq and religious persecution against Christians.

I am appalled at what is happening.

The scenes we have witnessed have been appalling. The ground invasion of Gaza by Israeli troops was wrong and has only led to even more suffering.

The Tour de France was a stunning success for Leeds and for the wonders of Yorkshire. The Headrow was heaving with spectators from first thing on Saturday morning and I’ve never seen the city centre so crowded. The organisers of the Tour de France were bowled over by the enthusiastic welcome the riders received everywhere they went, and Yorkshire has never had a better advertisement for its many wonders and charms! We should once again say a big thank you to Gary Verity of welcome to Yorkshire, Keith Wakefield and Tom Riordan from Leeds City Council, all of the other councils that backed the bid and all of those who worked so hard to make it so successful. Someone said to me on Saturday “This is what you get when you devolve power”. How true that is.

Few Labour ministers have made the transition from Blair to Brown to Miliband as seamlessly as Hilary Benn, an MP proud of his late father’s political legacy and determined to create his own. Jess Bowie meets the shadow communities secretary.
