The problems facing the health service are being keenly felt in Leeds. We recently read about operations, including cancer operations, being cancelled in the city, and the pressures on the LGI and St James's accident and emergency departments - staff and patients - as well as on GPs are enormous. Saying that there have only been a ‘small number of incidents’ nationally or trying to blame staff and councils is wrong and ignores the truth about what is happening. I am also very concerned about the Sustainability and Transformation Plans which will involve further cuts that we simply can’t afford, locally or nationally.

A lot of you have contacted me about the vote on the Bill which will enable the Government to trigger Article 50 to start the process of leaving the EU following last summer’s decision in the referendum. Here is my speech in the House of Commons on 31 January setting out why I will vote for the Bill but also want the Government to get the right deal for the UK. You can also watch my speech here https://goo.gl/pXPNbp .

January can be a financially difficult time for many so I’d strongly advise anyone who is worried about their energy bills to get help and advice – by calling their energy supplier or seeking help from a debt counselling charity like Christians Against Poverty.

First of all, Happy New Year to one and all. I cannot pretend that 2016 was my favourite 12 months of all time so I am hoping that 2017 will represent a distinct improvement.

Talking of which, best of luck to Leeds Utd and their manager Garry Monk for the New Year. At the time of writing, Leeds are in a rich vein of form, and after quite a lot of difficulties and disappointment, could this be the season when Premiership status returns to Elland Road? Here’s hoping.

Many constituents have contacted me about the horror of Aleppo.

What we have all seen going on there has been unspeakable and it is to our shame as a world that we have been unable to prevent it. The Russian and Syrian governments have attacked hospitals and civilians, and in effect besieged eastern Aleppo by refusing to allow aid in.

Recent figures published by End Child Poverty have highlighted the problem of rising inequality in our community. Leeds Central is the 7th worst constituency in the country for child poverty, with 11,520 of our children estimated to be living below the poverty line. Greater demand for foodbanks in recent years is just one consequence of what has been happening, as some people struggle to pay the bills and feed their families. Faced with this, the question for all of us is what can we do to change things and ensure that every child has a decent start in life? A fairer society would be a good place to begin and a good education is fundamental to that.

Although I campaigned hard to remain in the European Union, I respect the outcome of the referendum. The UK will therefore now be leaving the EU and the triggering of Article 50 is required to start the process. The recent court ruling was important, but it does not change the outcome of the referendum. What the court said was that the Government cannot initiate Article 50 using what is known as the Royal prerogative power; instead this must be a decision for Parliament. The Government is currently appealing but if it is unsuccessful, then I expect that they will come forward with legislation to trigger Article 50, which I will support.
