Following a ministerial announcement in May, the new Better Off in Work Credit (BWC) will be piloted throughout Jobcentre Plus in Yorkshire and the Humber from 27 October. BWC aims to ensure that people who have been on benefits continuously for 26 weeks or more – and who move into full-time work - will receive an income from work, including any in work benefits, of at least £25 more than they received from out of work benefits. This is intended to remove an important barrier to people taking jobs and to help them to move into and settle into work. The pilot is expected to last for at least a year; if it is successful, it will be rolled out nationally in 2009/10.
