John Gunnell

The death of John Gunnell (the former Leeds MP and Hunslet councillor) has been keenly felt by many in the constituency. And as shown by the very large turnout for his funeral at Wetherby Parish Church, John was highly respected by all who knew him and commanded much affection.

He was a doughty campaigner for West Yorkshire (as Leader of the county council) and a lifelong peace activist.

As the Guardian said, John was a man “ imbued with a belief that public authorities exist to improve the lot of their citizens and a conviction that it was not only legitimate but obligatory to use their resources to develop local services…he was par excellence a local government man.”

He will be much missed.
