The Government is committed to a new high speed rail line being built between London and Birmingham and has given a company called High Speed 2 a £5m budget to draw up options for extending it further north. It’s my belief that an East Coast high speed rail route between London and Leeds is vital for the Leeds' future growth and for the future of the region. Transport Secretary Lord Adonis has raised the prospect of a high speed trans-Pennine rail link connecting Leeds with both Manchester and Newcastle, while Sir David Rowlands, Chairman of High Speed 2, recently told the YEP that Yorkshire will be included in plans he will present to ministers by the end of this year. I have called for a major campaign by city leaders in Leeds to highlight the importance of high speed rail. I know how important it is to the future of the city and I will continue to make the case along with other cities that would benefit from an East Coast high speed rail network.
