ABOUT THE CONSTITUENCY OF LEEDS CENTRAL

Leeds Central is an inner-city constituency, with wards that are among the most deprived in the country. It covers Hyde Park, Woodhouse, Little London, Lincoln Green, Burmantofts and Richmond Hill, Osmondthorpe, Belle Isle, Middleton, Hunslet, Holbeck, Beeston, Cottingley and the City Centre.

Over the years, the city’s growth has been built on hard work and a capacity to change with the times, alongside a diverse population. Leeds has a long and proud tradition of welcoming newcomers to the city.

Starting from the north, it covers the area around the two universities, the two hospitals (’Jimmy’s’ and the LGI), and the West Yorkshire playhouse. It then runs down across a thriving city centre, over the River Aire, and on to Holbeck, Hunslet, and Beeston, taking in Leeds Utd FC at Elland Road as well as a large area of manufacturing, and then on to Belle Isle and Middleton. From Cottingley in the west to Burmantofts, Richmond Hill and Osmondthorpe in the east, each is a unique community with its own characteristics and traditions like the Beeston Festival, and the Holbeck and Hunslet Galas.

The area has seen significant public investment in recent years, with new schools – South Leeds and Primrose high schools and new primaries in West Hunslet and Osmondthorpe. And school results continue to improve thanks to the hard work of teachers and - of course - pupils. There’s also the new state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre at St. James’ Hospital and new health centres in East Leeds, Beeston Village and Dewsbury Road.

Community spirit is very important and as your MP I support local people who are working  hard in running residents associations, sports clubs, community groups, looking after the elderly, caring for the environment, and campaigning on issues we care about. We achieve most when we work together!
